This nice activity is a reading comprehension, complemented with audiovisual material that uses the letter of a British soldier who actually witnessed the 1914 Christmas truce.

The contribution was made for school-leavers, since they study contemporary History  - and the exercise is meant to let them practice exam skills; however the letter could be reduced and the questionnaire could be adapted to be used with lower levels. 

This school activity is thought to complement the Christmas season, and it is meant to

- involve all of the language skills,

- be followed by a class discussion,

- and it is suitable for crosscuricular activity, as well.

During an inspection to a psychiatric hospital the visiting manager asked the superintendent how they found out if someone needed to be hospitalized.

'You see?' the superintendent replied 'we fill a bath tub and then give the patients a teaspoon, a mug and a bucket and ask them to empty it...'

'Oh, I see! - the inspector replied ' a normal person would use the bucket for the purpose, being it the largest object...'

'Not really' the superintendent replied ' a NORMAL person would simply take the stopper off! We just so happen to have a room available for you, would you prefer the bed near the window?'
