La conferenza si terrà il 15 maggio all'Università della Valle d'Aosta

La conferenza, organizzata dalla Laurea Magistrale in Lingue e Culture per la Promozione delle Aree Montane, si terrà in lingua inglese e verterà su un tema di grande attualità per l'educazione delle nuove generazioni: il bambino e la natura. Nello specifico, i relatori analizzeranno le modalità attraverso le quali viene descritto, raffigurato, tradotto e contestualizzato l'elemento naturale all'interno delle produzioni letterarie per bambini.

L'incontro si rivolge ad un pubblico di insegnanti delle scuole primarie e secondarie di primo grado e di studenti dei corsi di laurea in Lingue e in Scienze della Formazione dell'Ateneo.

Attraverso l'esame dei carteggi italiani di Elisabetta I, il seminario evidenzierà il ruolo principale che la nostra lingua ha giocato nella vita politica ed intellettuale del tempo e offrirà una guida per creare un'interessante "teaching unit" sulla scrittura di corte.

Dal Guardian la rivelazione dell'identità del dedicatario

Some of the finest, most quoted verses in the English language were dedicated to him, and for centuries literary scholars have tried to establish his identity. Now fresh research suggests that the mysterious Mr WH, to whom Shakespeare’s sonnets were dedicated, was not, as had been thought, a contemporary English nobleman, but a recently deceased associate of the Sonnets’ publisher, Thomas Thorpe, which would explain the dedication’s strangely funereal form. Geoffrey Caveney, an American researcher, has unearthed possible evidence to link the initials with William Holme, who had both personal and professional connections to Thorpe. Both came from prominent Chester families, were publishing apprentices in 1580s London and had strong connections with theatres through publishing major playwrights such as Ben Jonson and George Chapman.

Of all the year no period was looked forward to with an interest like that inspired by the approach of Christmas and the following days. The principal characteristic of the Yule-tide sports was general hospitality and the closely related unbinding of social ties. It was the one time of the year when there was practically no distinction of class, when lord, lady, and rustic met in the same hall, played the same games, and romped without stint as if they were social equals. The proper period for the Yule-tide sports was from Christmas Eve to Twelfth Day; but, especially among the lower classes, this period was extended in both directions.

It was customary during this period to decorate the halls, houses, etc., with bay, laurel, ivy, and holly leaves, decorations which were kept in place to the end of the period of celebration. An allusion in Stow's Survey of London to this habit contains also an allusion to the extension of the period of celebration by the common people. "Against the feast of Christmas," he says, "every man's house, as also their parish churches, were decked with holm, ivy, bays, and whatsoever the season of the year afforded to be green. The conduits and the standards in the streets were likewise garnished. Amongst which I read, that in the year 1444, by tempest of thunder and lightning, on the first of February at night, Paul's steeple was fired, but with great labour quenched, and towards the morning of Candlemas day, at the Leadenhall in Comhill, a standard of tree, being set up in the pavement fast in the ground, nailed full of holm and ivy, for disport of Christmas to the people, etc."

Oggi si celebra il centesimo anniversario della nascita del celebre autore Gallese

In questa occasione, la Oxford University Press ha selezionato e reso disponibile gratuitamente online alcuni articoli ed alcune poesie del grande poeta.

George Koppelman and Daniel Wechsler ne hanno dato notizia nel loro nuovo libro Shakespeare’s Beehive.

In un interessante articolo disponibile su The Collation, il sito della Folger Shakespeare Library, Michael Witmore e Heather Wolfe discutono degli elementi che potrebbero confermare o confutare la veridicità di questa scoperta che, se vera, sarebbe rivoluzionaria per gli studi shakespeariani.

Il famoso Institute of English Studies rischia di essere chiuso per mancanza di fondi.
